The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is the largest equities-based exchange in the world. It was formerly run as a private organization but became a public entity on March 8, 2006. It was incorporated in 1792 by 24 stockbrokers when they signed the Buttonwood Agreement. The exchange started with five securities which included two bank stocks and three government bonds.

A series of mergers over the years has contributed to its global presence and massive size. Currently, it is owned by Intercontinental Exchange, an American holding company. It was a part of NYSE Euronext (NYX) previously.

How does the NYSE Work?

Also known as Big Board, the NYSE consists of 21 rooms that are used to facilitate trading. It is the world’s largest stock exchange in terms of market capitalization and estimated to be $28.5 trillion as of June 30, 2018. It relied for several years on floor trading but now several NYSE trades have transitioned into electronic systems. However, still, floor traders are used to set pricing and deal in high-volume institutional trading.

The NYSE is open for trading from 9:30am to 4:00pm ET Monday through Friday with the exception of holidays. The exchange provides a means to the buyers and sellers to trade shares of stock in companies that have registered for public trading. It executes trades in a continuous auction format where the traders can carry out the transactions on behalf of investors. The auction process was automated in 1995 which enabled the traders to execute orders electronically.

The NYSE is popular for its innovative trades and is popular as the second-largest options trading market. It also deals with derivatives and small-to-mid-cap stocks. The exchange is competitively priced and relies on electronic Designated Market Makers (e-DMMs). The company has stated clearly on its website that it has been designed for growing companies.
