What is Compound?
Ethereum blockchain-based protocol Compound is a decentralized algorithmic money market. As such, it uses lending pools to enable loans in different cryptocurrencies. Lenders providing funds for lending pools earn profit from depositing via special issue tokens. Borrowers, on the other hand, can avail themselves of collateralized loans. Compound Protocol began its development stages in 2018 and was introduced as Compound v2 in May 2019. Lenders and borrowers don't have to deal with intermediary organizations because transactions are made directly with Compound itself. Interest rates are set algorithmically, dispelling the need for a central authority. Compound has a native token for governance called Compound Governance Token or COMP. It is used to create network proposals and allocates a vote on different issues like interest rate models, borrowing capacities, collateral types, and more. Lenders receive cToken, a generic token that references underlying assets they deposit—if they put in ETH, they get cETH, and so on. COMP stakeholders are provided with the power to control the network, given that the protocol's goal is to be a wholly Decentralized Autonomous Organization or DAO. The current market cap is valued at $1.37 billion, with a maximum total supply of 10 million. Out of it, nearly 5.3 million are in circulation.
