What is USD Coin?
USD Coin or USDC is a stablecoin, and as such is tied to fully reserved assets. It is claimed to be redeemable for US dollars on a 1:1 basis, making it an attractive alternative coin today. This crypto is controlled by Centre, a consortium founded by crypto exchange Coinbase and Circle, a peer-to-peer (P2P) payments technology company. As a public smart contract, the USDC boasts the biggest stablecoin ecosystem in the world. It enjoys support from across many products, services, and companies, which includes exchanges, digital wallets, and payment services. It is suitable for investors wanting stability in the otherwise volatile world of crypto. USDC was announced in May 2018 and launched four months after. Two months after its release in the market, the token bagged fifth ranking in highest market cap list based on CoinMarketCap data. While not the most popular dollar-backed coin, USDC offers transparency in its auditing and funding processes. What makes this coin unique is that its parent company is regulated by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network or FinCEN, and a registered Money Service Business. It means that it has mechanisms in place to prevent money laundering. The USDC has about 23 billion in circulation today according to the Circle.
