What is Tezos?

Tezos was introduced in 2014 as a protocol that addresses the issue of 'fork-based governance'. It is a decentralized proof-of-stake network that is open-source and energy-efficient. It enables peer-to-peer transactions wherein smart contracts can be deployed. This blockchain network has an on-chain governance model to avoid hard forks that often arise in other ecosystems. It is like the democratic process wherein XTZ holders can vote on proposals to improve the blockchain. Its digital token, Tez with the symbol XTZ, is not mined but rather a reward for participating in the proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. It is interesting to note that Tezos mean smart contracts in ancient Greek, according to developers. It is unique in that it aims to improve the smart contract concept by having users control network rules directly through its self-amending feature. The blockchain is easily upgradable and open to innovative changes to its network. Despite facing issues in the past years, Tezos has seen a threefold increase in price between 2019 and 2020 and is gaining attention in recent months. It has an exciting concept that investors are willing to explore moving forward into digital currency. The current market cap is $2.2 billion and a circulating supply of 850.2 million XTZ out of 880 million XTZ total supply.
